ŌKU New Zealand: Blending Tradition and Sustainability in Herbal Wellness

Founded by Helen Paul Smith and Scott Smith in 2010, ŌKU New Zealand produces high-quality, award-winning, B Corp- certified wellness products made from native Aotearoa New Zealand botanicals. The company prioritises sustainability and traditional practices, with a strong commitment to sharing mātauranga me te reo Māori (Māori knowledge and language) with the world.

Helen’s Māori heritage and the pristine, natural environment in which she was raised, shape ŌKU’s business strategy, which balances profitability with community well-being, environmental stewardship, and future generations.

ŌKU integrates mātauranga (knowledge) Māori principles, aligning with environmental and intergenerational responsibility. The company integrates mātauranga Maori principles, aligning business operations with social and environmental values.

Guided by kaitiakitanga (guardianship), ŌKU applies sustainable practices and promotes rongoā Māori (traditional medicine), supporting local communities and fostering cultural values.

ŌKU uses a giant septic worm tank to filter waste, has solar panels on their roof, and collects rainwater. Additionally, all packaging is plastic-free. Traditional prayers are performed before and after meetings, meals, and harvesting, ensuring the spiritual well-being of both the land and people. Harvesting is done sustainably, with leftover plant material returned to the earth.

ŌKU's unique range of herbal products includes healing balms, chest and immunity support elixirs and kawakawa teas.

The company is dedicated to preserving and promoting rongoā Māori, by making traditional healing remedies accessible, while advancing regenerative planting and sustainable harvesting practices. They are also part of a Māori B Corp collective, aiming to leverage the certification for Indigenous people globally.

Support from a range of organisations has been pivotal for ŌKU, to operate authentically within a mātauranga Māori framework, while also receiving business guidance and support for international growth. Helen’s kaumātua (respected elder) has provided valuable mentorship, helping the company stay grounded in its cultural values.

ŌKU has experienced impressive growth, driven by increasing demand for authentic Māori products, and is currently exporting to Australia, Singapore, and the Middle East.
